Lack of recycling facilities and waste management in Indian villages is a huge problem. Here, in the mountains, while people take pride in keeping their orchards and houses clean, they just dump all the rubbish in the nearby forest, behind bushes or down the hillside - many pristine places are consequently becoming a garbage dumps.
We at Himalayan Orchard have dedicated every 2nd Saturday of the month to cleaning up different areas of our surrounding forest and villages.
Tea and home made cake is offered to all those who help.
We collect and segregate dry waste into 3 main categories: broken glass, whole bottles, plastic bottles. These are taken to the recycling centre whenever we visit the city.
At 2 Rs a kilo, whatever money we get is used to buy goodies & school stationery for the children who regularly participate in the event. Whatever can be burned is burned.
Ideally, we want to set up a bottle bank in the village, so that people don't throw glass and plastic bottles in the forest.
